About fraction operations

This calculator performs exact integer arithmetic for fractions. Results are simplified using the greatest common divisor (GCD). Decimal conversions use long division to the specified number of digits for exact, repeatable output.

Simplifying fractions

Simplifying divides numerator and denominator by their GCD so the fraction is represented in lowest terms. Example: 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.

Adding & subtracting

Fractions are added/subtracted by converting to a common denominator (the least common multiple of each denominator), adjusting numerators, performing the arithmetic, then simplifying the result.

Multiplying & dividing

Multiplication multiplies numerators and denominators then simplifies. Division multiplies by the reciprocal of the divisor (flip numerator/denominator) and then simplifies.

Mixed numbers

A mixed number (e.g., 1 1/2) is a whole part plus a proper fraction. Internally the calculator converts mixed numbers to improper fractions for computation, then converts back if requested.
